Lagerman Agricultural Preserve Opens

Lagerman Reservoir, located just west of Longmont, has been expanded and renamed Lagerman Agricultural Preserve. This expansion and the new Open Sky Loop Trail is now open. Lagerman Reservoir is a place enjoyed by anglers, birders, boaters, picnickers and dog-walkers. This man-made reservoir boasts some of the best warm-water fishing around. With a seasonal osprey nest, wetlands, and a picnic site, there’s something for the entire family.

Lagerman Reservoir has been expanded to become Lagerman Agricultural Preserve

Lagerman Agricultural Preserve boasts the addition of about 660 acres of active agricultural land to Lagerman Reservoir, totaling 960 acres. In addition, 5.5 miles of trail have been added, including the 4.9-mile Open Sky Loop and two link trails. A future expansion to the south of Lagerman Reservoir will add another trail and views of an additional 600 acres of active agricultural land. In total, over 2,000 acres of agricultural land are now preserved as part of the Lagerman Agricultural Preserve.

A group shelter, accommodating up to 50 people, is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Public restrooms are available at the trailhead. The parking lot can accommodate 27 cars and five horse or boat trailers. From April 1 through August 31, the western end of the reservoir is closed for nesting birds. Hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, & dog walking are permitted; however, swimming and wading are prohibited. Boats, canoes, kayaks, stand up paddle boards (SUP), and inflatables where you sit out of the water are allowed. Sailboards and sailboats are prohibited.

Wetland habitats, nestled within the surrounding Great Plains, support aquatic plant and animal life and serve to lure in large numbers of migrating bird species. With grasses, wildflowers and trees surrounding the wetlands, these areas are biologically diverse both in and out of the water. People who enjoy fishing will appreciate the variety of fish at Lagerman, including, black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, walleye and largemouth bass. Artificial and live bait is permitted. Thirty species of birds can be found at Lagerman, including, the American avocet, American white pelican, bald eagle, great blue heron and great horned owl. to name a few.

The park is open from sunrise to sunset.
